5/5/2023 0 Comments Arduino stepper motor![]() ![]() Right, so as I mentioned above, we to send (to the driver) a direction signal and a step signal – but to keep things simple, let’s first focus on moving in one direction (let’s ignore the direction signal). The basic skeleton of an Arduino sketch contains the setup() function and the loop() function the code is read from top down, we go through the setup() function once, whereas we will keep looping within the loop() function we will used this fact to our advantage and make our stepper continually run – if you’re already way confused, read this great tutorial. I’m going to assume you’re working with some sort of Arduino however the operating principles of the code could be carried over to something else like a Raspberry Pi. Please check that the power source you are using falls within the voltage specs of your particular Arduino! This is a post about coding and not proper electrical design however I will point out that with the current setup shown above, I’m powering both the stepper and the Arduino with the same power source. Our stepper (a two-phase bipolar) will have four wires, often times they will be grouped into A & B each group will have two wires and it doesn’t matter which wire goes into which half of each group – all that matters is that both A group wires are paired together. Each driver requires a wire carrying the direction signal (shown as Dir in the diagram) and one carrying the step signal ( Step in our diagram) the direction signal is going to be either on or off, the step signal is going to look like a series of on/off values – one on/off combination will make the stepper step a single step. Here’s a quick overview of how things are connected. Power supply – this guy outputs 12V & 5V and provides plenty of current (2A).Stepper motor – a nice little bipolar motor!.Big Easy Driver – now handles 2A per phase!.Have you landed on this page without any of the above mentioned components?
